Cookies and local storage
Hatch does not use cookies, and it uses no analytics, advertising or tracking technology. It only keeps the data it needs to work on your own device.
1. Cookies
Hatch sets no cookies, first-party or third-party. We have checked this in the running site, and it loads no scripts, fonts, images or other files from other companies’ servers.
2. What we store on your device
Instead of cookies, Hatch uses your browser’s local storage and IndexedDB (and, in the iPhone and iPad app, the app’s own storage and the iOS Keychain). Laws about cookies, such as the EU ePrivacy Directive, also cover these similar technologies. All of the items below are strictly necessary to provide the service you asked for, or are settings you chose. They are never used to track you, and they are never sent to anyone else.
| Name | What it is for | How long |
|---|---|---|
| hatch.v1 | Your progress and settings on this device: lessons, XP, streak, theme, and so on. | Until you clear site data or delete the app. |
| hatch.drafts.v1 | The code you were in the middle of writing, so a refresh does not lose it. | Until you clear site data. |
| hatch.backup.* | An automatic safety copy made when you reset your progress, so you can undo it. | Until you delete it in Settings. |
| hatch.auth.v1 | Your sign-in token, so you stay logged in. In the iPhone and iPad app this is kept in the iOS Keychain instead. | Up to 90 days, or until you sign out. |
| hatch.user.v1 | Your account name and status, so Hatch can open without a connection. | Until you sign out. |
| hatch.sync.base.v1 | A timestamp that lets syncing avoid overwriting newer progress. | Until you sign out or clear site data. |
| IndexedDB: /work | The small private file area Python uses when a lesson reads or writes files. | Until you clear site data. |
Your browser may also keep ordinary cached copies of Hatch’s own files (the Python runtime, for example) so the site loads faster. That is managed by your browser.
3. Why there is no consent banner
Consent is not required for storage that is strictly necessary to deliver a service you have asked for. Because we use nothing else, there is nothing to ask you about. If that ever changes, we will ask first, and update this page.
4. Clearing it
Sign out in Profile to remove your sign-in details from this device. To remove everything, clear this site’s data in your browser settings, or delete the app. Signed-in progress is also kept in your account, so you can get it back by logging in again. To delete the account itself, use Profile, then Delete account. See the Privacy Policy for how we handle account data.
