Accessibility statement
Hatch should be usable by everyone who wants to learn Python. If something in it gets in your way, please tell us and we will fix it.
Our goal
We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA across the website and the iPhone and iPad app. This is also the technical standard that accessibility laws such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (as courts apply it to websites) and the European Accessibility Act point to.
What we do
- Pages use real headings, landmarks, lists, buttons and links, and every page has a “Skip to content” link.
- Everything can be used with a keyboard, focus is always visible, and dialogs trap focus and return it when they close.
- Form fields have visible labels, errors are announced, and no information depends on colour alone.
- Text and controls meet the AA colour-contrast ratios in the light and dark themes. Text can be enlarged to 200% and pages reflow on small screens without side-scrolling.
- Animations respect the “reduce motion” setting on your device and can be turned off in Settings.
- Touch targets are large enough to tap comfortably.
- Pages run through an automated accessibility checker (axe) as part of our testing, and the main flows are checked by hand with a keyboard.
Known limitations
- The code editor. Lessons use the CodeMirror editor. It supports keyboard use and screen readers, but writing code with a screen reader is harder than ordinary text, and some editor features announce less than we would like. Press Escape then Tab to leave the editor with the keyboard.
- The output terminal. Program output is announced as it appears, but long or fast output can be hard to follow with a screen reader. Output is also available as selectable text.
- Screen-reader testing. We have not yet completed formal testing with every screen reader and browser combination (VoiceOver, NVDA, JAWS, TalkBack). We would value hearing from you if you find a problem.
- Charts and badges. Decorative game graphics are hidden from assistive technology; their meaning (levels, leagues, streaks) is always also given as text.
Tell us about a problem
Email info@staraep.fun with what you were trying to do, the page, and the device, browser and assistive technology you use if you can. We reply within 5 working days and aim to fix confirmed barriers promptly. If you need a lesson or other content in a different form, ask and we will do our best to provide it.
